Ivan Popchev (1941 – 1994)

Ivan Popchev was born on October 30, 1941 in Dabovo village, near Stara Zagora town. He is from the generation of artists that changed the appearance of the Bulgarian art in the 1970s and the 1980s. After graduating from the National Academy of Arts in 1967, Popchev settled down in the town of Stara Zagora. He was actively involved in the Bulgarian art circles. He created his own world of figural compositions, landscapes, nudes, still lifes. Emotionally colored and imbued with lyricism, his pictures are highly appreciated at plein air events in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, as well as at forums in Switzerland, Canada, Japan. Many of his works are featured in collections in France, Portugal, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, the USA and India.

He was posthumously awarded the Honorary Citizen title of the town of Stara Zagora.
